I’M GOING TO ENGLAND!
Some friends of a friend have offered me a chance to design/build costumes for their theater company*, and other possibilities (like taking classes at the London School of Historical Dress) have also started popping up. I’m beyond thrilled, I can’t imagine an opportunity that would be better for me. GAAAAAAAH I won’t say too much now because I’m sure I’ll be going on about this a lot from now on, but suffice to say I’m very excited and anxious to get over there and start learning/working*.
*Just in case customs tracks this post down any time in the future, I just want to specify that I will NOT be getting paid for said work.
Awwww yeah, look who made the back cover of the latest Costumer’s Guild West newsletter!!!
Especially if you live in California. Memberships for The Costumer’s Guild West’s Costume College are on sale now, and if there is any way for you to go, DO IT. Costume College is a 4 day conference mainly consisting of lectures and workshops covering almost any facet of historical and sci-fi/fantasy costuming you could imagine. Professional designers, milliners, fashion historians, etc. from all over the world come to teach (and learn), but costumers of any skill level can attend. There’s also an incredible marketplace, a gala, a costume exhibition, a professional photography booth, and a bunch of other fun stuff.
I can’t imagine a better way to meet other costumers, learn new costuming skills, and generally get inspired and have a great time. PLEASE, if you’re at all interested check out the CGW’s website or ask me. I can’t encourage you to check it out enough.
Oh yeah, I signed my contracts for Cabrillo Stage’s Christmas show today! This time around I’m going to be the wardrobe mistress in addition to stitching, but it’s only a four person show and it pays well so I’m feeling optimistic. Ooh, and I’ll FINALLY get my own key card which will give me that nice warm feeling of power and authority.

Go find a super long pleated skirt at Goodwill or something, and make this pleated dress. It’s super easy, even if you don’t have lots of sewing skills.
I don’t like most online sewing tutorials, especially ones that show how to make clothes. Case in point, I thought this was really pretty and cool until I looked at the actual article. I GUARANTEE that if you did this same thing following the instructions as they are it would look nowhere near as good as this, and/or she had to do more than she says she did. The waistband wouldn’t automatically sit that way as a neckband, and there would be SERIOUS side-boob issues if the sleeves were completely open on the inside to the waist. Also, Fray Check? Are you kidding me?
This dress probably looked good enough on the day she made it/took the pictures, but after washing/wearing it a couple times? I doubt it. Maybe it’s because I’ve been making a ton of clothes this past month, but stuff like this has really been aggravating me. As if I was an architect and I saw an impressive photograph of a building made out of cardboard with a tutorial that said “It’s super easy, even if you don’t have lots of carpentry skills.”
Edit: I just realized that I probably sound really arrogant. I would never discourage anyone from sewing regardless of how skilled they were, but I’ve worked so hard to develop my own skills that it annoys me when people present high-quality sewing as easier than it is.
Completed pics of the Kevin Flynn costume I made for my Dad! Not very many people recognized it, but the ones who did REALLY loved it (especially the other Tron people, of course). Also a couple times we just heard people yelling out “Oh hey, check it out, it’s Jeff Bridges!” I was really happy with the way it looked, even though the dang identity disc ran out of batteries as soon as we got downtown >:(
My costume! Let’s hope that the rest of the night makes up for this afternoon.
THIS Pearl Forrester wouldn’t mind shooting someone into space right about now…
The general consensus is that I’ve done a good, good thing; and something tells me that when it’s finished I’m going to deserve a long, awkward hug.

Button-down poet shirt with diamond yoke, silk satin.
I’m always disappointed that I can’t post a lot of the coolest stuff I make since it’s for Cabrillo Stage and legally I can’t post any pictures online. But I finished this a few days ago for a private commission, I was afraid that it would be really goofy looking after I saw the fabric and the pattern they wanted but I’m actually pretty happy with how it turned out.
