I’M GOING TO ENGLAND!
Some friends of a friend have offered me a chance to design/build costumes for their theater company*, and other possibilities (like taking classes at the London School of Historical Dress) have also started popping up. I’m beyond thrilled, I can’t imagine an opportunity that would be better for me. GAAAAAAAH I won’t say too much now because I’m sure I’ll be going on about this a lot from now on, but suffice to say I’m very excited and anxious to get over there and start learning/working*.
*Just in case customs tracks this post down any time in the future, I just want to specify that I will NOT be getting paid for said work.
Awwww yeah, look who made the back cover of the latest Costumer’s Guild West newsletter!!!
Especially if you live in California. Memberships for The Costumer’s Guild West’s Costume College are on sale now, and if there is any way for you to go, DO IT. Costume College is a 4 day conference mainly consisting of lectures and workshops covering almost any facet of historical and sci-fi/fantasy costuming you could imagine. Professional designers, milliners, fashion historians, etc. from all over the world come to teach (and learn), but costumers of any skill level can attend. There’s also an incredible marketplace, a gala, a costume exhibition, a professional photography booth, and a bunch of other fun stuff.
I can’t imagine a better way to meet other costumers, learn new costuming skills, and generally get inspired and have a great time. PLEASE, if you’re at all interested check out the CGW’s website or ask me. I can’t encourage you to check it out enough.
I just got this letter of recommendation from Tandy Beal (She was the director of that dance show I worked on last month) I’m being a bit hypocritical here because I hate it when artist-types constantly talk about how artistic and great they are on their blogs, but I’m still pretty high on the fact that someone who was involved in The Nightmare Before Christmas likes my work, because that’s pretty much the exact kind of validation I’ve hoped for my whole life.
One of the things I was so excited to get in the mail when I got home was the letter from the Costumer’s Guild telling me I’ve been accepted to this summer’s Costume College on scholarship! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
Speaking of my Dad, he looks like Jeff Bridges and I’ve been telling him for weeks that he either has to be Rooster Cogburn from True Grit of Kevin Flynn from Tron: Legacy for halloween this year. I was pushing for Flynn since I’ve been wanting to work with lighting techniques for a while (plus it would be less expensive) but whenever I suggested that he automatically thought it would be a stereotypical skintight, day-glo tron suit and he said he’d look stupid.
He finally saw Tron today and when I asked him again whether he would wear ^that^ outfit for halloween he said “I would wear that every damn day.”

Today Maria (my boss/bff at the costume shop for those that don’t know) and I went to San Francisco again to borrow costumes from the American Conservatory Theater. I always love going there because they’ve got a HUGE stock full of insanely fun/gorgeous costumes; also my drama class used take field trips to see shows there when I was in high school so it’s neat to see everything that goes on behind the scenes.
While we were getting everything together Maria gave me some awesome news! After two seasons and 5 shows as an intern I’m finally going to be hired as a stitcher (more $), however I’m probably going to be the only stitcher for this show. Yikes, let’s hope I’m up to it…
The pull went pretty smoothly even though it took them almost 2 hours to fill out our invoice since we borrowed so much. Thankfully Maria was able to double park behind the building so we could load up the van without making 8 trips back and forth to the parking garage two blocks away with our tiny cart.
Unfortunately there was a dying seagull in the middle of the tiny one-way street we had to drive down and our attempts to maneuver around it failed. That sound will haunt my dreams for months.
G’NIGHT EVERYONE!
